History

In April of 1986, Jim Rose decided that something was missing in Orono, Maine. A long-time bicycle enthusiast, Jim opened Rose Bike Shop as a part-time venture based out of his home. “I’ve always loved bikes,” he says. “When I was a kid, being on a bike always gave me a sense of freedom. It still does. I still love it.”

In the beginning, Jim was the sole mechanic, salesman, and owner of the business, but soon found that the shop was growing and taking on a life of its own. So, three years later, in April of 1989, Jim moved the shop onto Main street in Orono and hired a few mechanics to take on the wrenching responsibilities.

When the business began to grow, a retail space on Pine street opened up, and Jim grabbed the chance to expand his business. Now, with many years under his belt at the Pine street location, Rose bike shop is doing better than ever, thanks to Jim’s never-ending commitment to his customers. “When I first started, it was all about the bike. That’s changed over the years. Now it’s about the people—the customers, the workers. Many customers have become good friends and lots of former University of Maine students, who worked here years ago, still stop by when they are in Orono. It feels like home.”

Indeed, Rose Bike Shop has become synonymous with biking in Orono. Ask any Orono resident or student at the University of Maine, and they’ll tell you that Rose Bike Shop is the place to go for all of your biking needs. So come on by and Jim and the Rose Bike staff will show you the trails!
